There is no Teen Wolf Season 7 however there will be a new movie set in the Teen Wolf universe, Teen Wolf: The Movie, featuring many of the same characters. The film is set for a 2022 release on Paramount Plus, the streaming platform of ViacomCBS. The new movie is part of an overall 3-project deal with Executive Producer Jeff Davis that will also include a new streaming show about werewolves. The new show, Wolf Pack is unrelated to Teen Wolf and is instead based on a series of novels by Canadian author Edo Van Belkom.
History
The MTV show ended with Season 6 after network executives and Executive Producer Jeff Davis agreed the series had run its course.
As of 2020, ViacomCBS (MTV) no longer had the contractual rights to make new episodes of Teen Wolf. Conversely, while MGM retained all rights to the original Teen Wolf movie, they could not continue the television show without MTV's participation.
This contractual stalemate meant that future projects set in the current Teen Wolf Universe would be impossible without a new deal between the two owners of the Jeff Davis universe intellectual property.
In September 2021 Teen Wolf News reported that ViacomCBS executives were talking about Teen Wolf again. The company is rebooting several shows for the new Paramount Plus streaming service and Teen Wolf reportedly came up in that context. Teen Wolf News learned on September 10, 2021 that negotiations led by ViacomCBS executive Chris McCarthy had successfully resulted in a deal that will allow Paramount Plus to make the Teen Wolf movie.
Jeff Davis on Season 7
Jeff Davis, in a May 2021 interview with The Official Teen Wolf Wiki, told Administrator Paul V. Rea that the best hope for the future of the his Teen Wolf Universe would be increased interest on streaming platforms such as Amazon and Hulu and The Roku Channel. Davis' show Criminal Minds was recently brought back from cancellation at Paramount Plus because new viewer research showed Criminal Minds was, for a time, the number one show on Netflix among teens and young adults. Reboot Talks
In November 2020, Teen Wolf creator and executive producer Jeff Davis told The Official Teen Wolf Wiki's Paul V. Rea that Davis and MGM executives had met to discuss a possible reboot of Teen Wolf. Davis was clear that the reboot under discussion would not include "any characters, stories or mythology from the original MTV show". The current Teen Wolf Universe cannot move forward without a new agreement between ViacomCBS and MGM.
The reboot idea was taken off the table with the departure of Steve Start, the MGM executive who was working with Davis on the plan. Stark oversaw all the successful MGM television efforts during the past decade and was largely responsible for the companies successful exploitation of its existing IP like Fargo, Handmaid’s Tale, Silence of the Lambs, Vikings, and Teen Wolf. He left the company in early March of 2021.
According to Davis, Stark’s exit from the studio means the complete reboot is now dead.
Sale of MGM to Amazon
In January 2021, MGM Studios began exploring a possible sale of all its holdings including the original Teen Wolf IP. Potential buyers mentioned at the time include Disney and Apple TV+.
In May of 2021 Amazon reported it planned to purchase MGM for $9 billion (US).
The move would give Amazon partial control over the Teen Wolf intellectual property while ViacomCBS retains partial control of the IP through their ownership of MTV.
The sale of MGM is important because it could break the current stalemate between MTV parent company ViacomCBS and the others who own a piece of the Jeff DavisTeen Wolf Universe.
In June of 2021, The U.S. Federal Trade Commission as well as some members of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate called for increased scrutiny of the MGM purchase. Many of these powerful leaders question the growing influence large tech companies like Amazon have on the wider marketplace. This scrutiny is expected to lead to congressional anti-trust hearings which could delay the sale well into 2022.
False Rumors Spread
Beginning after MTV reunited the Teen Wolf cast for a Zoom call in June 2020, rumors began to spread that new episodes of show would soon follow.
While most of these rumors seem to be cases of media outlets looking for clickbait headlines and reporting isolated statements from the cast without context, there were a few internet trolls who attempted to fool fans with slickly produced videos purported to be real trailers for the returning series.
One channel went so far as to copy MTV's network branding and presented Teen Wolf Wiki videos from 2015 as if they were new behind the scenes content.
