Teen Wolf Funnies: Theo and Deuc

Since the very first episode, artists around the world responded to Teen Wolf with an amazing outpouring of original art. Most of it is beautiful, some is sexy and some is dark. This week TWN ran across some Teen Wolf art that is laugh-out-loud funny.

Theo and Deuc creator Chan Vasquez says the idea of combining Teen Wolf with Calvin and Hobbes came where so many great ideas start – in the shower.  “I was just taking a shower when suddenly Calvin and Hobbes mixed up with Teen Wolf in my mind. It was some days after the finale of Season 5. I was fascinated by the character of Theo and his final scene was so intense that it roamed through my mind for some days and I think I just wanted to give that whole scene a funny twist to get easier over it.”

Chan posted that first strip on tumblr and twitter on May 7 and a new cultural mashup was born. “When that first step was made, more ideas were literally flooding my mind.”

Chan, who works as a teacher in Germany, stumbled into the Teen Wolf Fandom back in 2013. “I discovered it on the website of a big video-on-demand service and it got pretty good ratings. And I always loved werewolves much more than vampires! So I thought I'll give it a try. And the series was so charming and full of humor, I liked especially the chemistry between Scott and Stiles. And since then I'm a big fan!”

This is not the first time folks have adapted Bill Waterson’s generation-defining comic strip to suit their own fandoms. You’ll find it among Star Wars, Sherlock, Supernatural and even Walking Dead fans.

“Since I was a kid, I adored Bill Waterson’s work and his refreshing, creative humor,” Chan explains. “I don't consider myself as an artist. I'm not very good at drawing, without the amazing work of Waterson for Calvin and Hobbes, I would be totally lost. But producing great art isn't my goal, I want to tell funny little stories in the Teen Wolf universe that make people smile or laugh. And if I made one single person smile, then it was worth the work.”

At first blush you might not think a couple of homicidal were-creatures would make a great comic duo but through Chan’s eyes you can totally see it. “The chemistry is somehow similar (to Calvin and Hobbes). Theo, like Calvin, is always on the go, planning something, big projects in his mind, over-estimating himself and often very selfish. Deucalion, like Hobbes, is much more rational and aware of consequences than Theo, but seldom interferes with Theo's troublemaking beyond a few warnings.”

“In my comics, he (Deuc) often comments the deeds of Theo and asks questions the kid didn't ask himself before, like in the series when Deucalion warns him that his willingness to stab anyone and everyone in the back will be his own downfall.”

Another aspect to Chan’s art is that the Teen Wolf Universe also includes Teen Wolf creators and fans as we see in this strip in which Theo plots to get back at the writers of the show.

That's Teen Wolf Writer Will Wallace holding the door there.

“The Teen Wolf fandom is very special, very passionate and I think it deserves to be looked at with a wink,” Chan says. “It’s just too tempting to deal with all the ships and the different opinions. It's also a small link to Calvin and Hobbes again, you can find this blending of Calvin's fantasy world with the real world too. So I love to deal with this mixture of the Teen Wolf and the real world too. It has so much potential!”

So who does this comic artist ship? “Since season 5, I'm shipping Maleo, although this relationship is highly problematic. But that makes it so interesting! Malia could be Theo's weakness,” Chan says.

While many of us are just discovering Chan’s work, the actors and writers on the show caught on quick.  “This is amazing,” Cody Christian wrote on his retweet of that very first strip. Gideon Emery has retweeted all of Chan’s work so far. Even Teen Wolf Creator Jeff Davis tells me the comic strips have crossed his desk, “Will (Wallace) showed this to me and it’s brilliant! We’re big fans.”

For Chan, the near-instant recognition has been a bit overwhelming. “It’s was a huge boost! To know that they've seen them is a huge motivation.”

And we have a good bit more to look forward to from Theo and Deuc, “Currently, I have ideas for over 25 comic strips and, every week, several more come up.”

Braeden’s UnREAL New Gig

Teen Wolf’s Badass Mercenary/US Marshal Braeden is showing off her badass beautiful side this week. Actor Meagan Tandy joins the cast of the second season of Lifetime Television’s drama series UnREAL on Monday night.

If you are unfamiliar, UnREAL is a scripted series that takes place behind-the-scenes on a fictional reality dating-competition series called Everlasting. It’s a thinly veiled dig at The Bachelor. It’s dark and hilarious in equal measure showing just how far the producers on so-called reality shows are willing to go to manipulate the participants for ratings-boosting drama.

Tandy is playing one of the contestants vying for the hand of the show’s first black “bachelor” which means she could be on the show for the full run or she could get booted early depending on the suitor’s tastes.

We do know they’ve given Tandy’s character a hell of a backstory - A dead fiancé and the suggestion that she might have killed him.

UnREAL Season 2 debuts Monday June 6 at 10 on Lifetime.

Teen Wolf Season 5 on CraveTV Canada

Teen Wolf Season 5 will be available for Canadian Netflix CraveTV users starting on Friday.

While here in the US, we can only stream episodes of the show through Amazon Prime, folks in other countries get the whole “unlimited access” thing through Netflix.

As TWN reported recently, Netflix UK has started offering the show’s first two seasons there while the rest of the nations in the Commonwealth can currently enjoy up through Season 4. The addition of the latest 20 episodes in Canada suggests new episodes could be on the way for those other countries soon.

Unfortunately, television content producers have yet to catch up to the whole “global community” thing so each individual territory is still under a different agreement meaning some folks get Teen Wolf and some folks don’t.

The original version of the this post said Teen Wolf Season 5 would be added to Netflix Canada. This was a mistake. The person responsible is being dealt with in the harshest manner. We apologize for the error.

Season 6 Debut: Still Waiting for MTV

According to multiple sources, MTV still has yet to decide exactly when Teen Wolf will debut Season 6.

This long lingering silence also suggests they don’t plan to debut the show this summer since there’s no real time left to generate the kind of pre-debut hype they’ve done in seasons past.

At this point, fans are actually awaiting the announcement of the debut date with the kind of eager anticipation usually reserved for the actual debut of the show. This suggests the date announcement itself could be considered highly promotable for the network and may be why they’re being so tight-lipped.

There was a slim hope that they might run a teaser for the new season during this week’s SCREAM season opener but the closing credits rolled without even a hint of Teen Wolf.

Unfortunately, with the MTV Movie Awards two months past and the Music Video Awards two month hence, there isn’t a really big showcase for the network to promote Teen Wolf this summer. The only opportunity they have to maybe generate headlines and hype will come during San Diego Comic Con which comes at the end of July this year.

Don’t Trust These People

Teen Wolf News has a list that we use to avoid sources of information that we know are unreliable when it comes to reporting on the show.

Of course, just after we formalized the list and posted it for all to see, even more unreliable sources popped up this week.

You should also avoid clickbait headlines from the following:

  • Gamenguide
  • Mobile & Apps
  • Day Herald

NOTE: We don’t have MoviePilot on the main list because they’ve been a joke for a while now and everybody should know better.

Posey’s Party

Tyler Posey hosted a party at his place over the long holiday weekend. We saw a number of familiar cast and crew from Teen Wolf HQ in attendance.
